These are all ways to describe the class of 2010 Wakefield High School Education Foundation Scholars. A foundation for a public high school is a very unusual thing. But Wakefield and its students and staff are extraordinary. That was evident by the fact that the new Secretary of Education chose Wakefield for his first school visit and that the new President chose to address all students in the nation from Wakefield’s gym in September 2009.

Both are extraordinary events and a great reward for the hard work of the students, parents, supporters and staff of Wakefield. Among the hidden treasures associated with Wakefield is the Wakefield High School Education Foundation and this has been a big year for the Foundation. It has awarded its millionth dollar in scholarship money.

The non-profit Wakefield High School Education Foundation was founded in 1986. To date it has given $1,098,169 in scholarships and teacher grants to a total of 219 Wakefield scholars. All of the work of the Foundation is done by volunteers. Traditionally 100% of all the funds raised each year is given. The funds come from all over the world in small and large amounts. The donors are Wakefield alumni, staff and friends. We thank all our donors for their support over the last twenty-four years. We hope you’ll continue to support us as we aim for the next million dollars. Donations can be mailed to the address below or through Paypal at wakefieldalumni.org.

One part of the Foundation is the Alumni Committee, which works to:
  • Connect alumni, staff, and friends of Wakefield to the school and each other
  • Preserve the history of Wakefield
  • Maintain contact information on staff, alumni, and friends
  • Assist classes with events
  • Create and support social opportunities for alumni
  • Establish and perpetuate the Wakefield Hall of Fame
  • Support the Wakefield Education Foundation

What’s happening with the Wakefield High School project?

New high school design

Building a new Wakefield is getting closer - The Arlington County Board has moved up the timing of the bond referendum for a new Wakefield building. The Board approved placing the $161 million on the November 2010 ballot. If approved by voters, construction of the new school could begin in 2011. Originally, it was expected that the bonds would be on the 2012 ballot. The new school will be built at the corner of George Mason Drive and Dinwiddie Street. The old school will be torn down. To see the drawing for the new school, visit wakefieldalumni.org. The Foundation is already thinking about how to commemorate the construction and demolition. If you’d like to be involved in the planning of the commemoration, let us know.

Events

2011 - A request for help with a video history of Wakefield - Jasmine Passa, Class of ’11, is already planning her senior project for next year which will be called “The Past, Present, and Future of Wakefield”. One objective is to interview alumni for their experiences at Wakefield, and their perspective on how much the school has changed or stayed the same. Jasmine is looking for alumni who would be willing to be interviewed for a video that shows what Wakefield really is. It will be part of a Time Capsule at the end of next school year. All questions will be sent in advance for the alums to think over; so they will feel as comfortable as possible. Jasmine can be reached at her cell phone (703-307-3615) or by email at jasmine_passa_wakefield@yahoo.com.
