William P. Averill, Jr., 56, died Saturday, July 12, 1997, at his residence after a sudden illness.  He was a native of Hartford Connecticut, but had been a resident of Tupelo, Mississippi, for the past four years.  He was a retired government employee and had served in the U.S. Navy in the early 60's.  Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. today at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Sammy Lansdell officiating.  Survivors include his mother, Helen Averill of Tupelo, and one sister, Helena Shurden of Tupelo.   Visitation will be thirty minutes prior to services.
