William Michel, former ECU, professional football player, dies
Greenville, North Carolina - William Thomas Michel, an East Carolina University graduate
who played professional football, has died. He was 64. Michel died Monday of a
heart attack, said his wife, Jean Mercer. After playing football at ECU, Michel
played for the Minnesota Vikings and later signed with the Washington Redskins, his wife
said. Michel was a member of the ECU Football Hall of Fame and the NFL Alumni
Association, as well as a recent member of the ECU Pirate Club. Following his
football career, Michel worked for the U.S. Postal Service, retiring after 35 years.
Survivors include Jean Michel, his wife of 40 years; daughters, Angela Michel Lower of
Greenville, North Carolina, and Kristan J. Michel Mosley of Orlando, Florida; son, William
T Billy Michel, Jr. of Germantown, Maryland; and numerous grandchildren. A private
family service will be held at a later date.
