Henry "Peter" Augustus Renz III, former superintendent of Williamsburg-James City County public schools, died Tuesday.  He was 66.

Dr. Renz began his teaching career in 1954 at Wakefield High in Arlington, becoming assistant principal and principal before moving to Williamsburg in 1968 to be superintendent.  "He had great involvement with the integration of the schools," said his son, David Renz.

He left the school system in 1981 and worked as a consultant with the Center for Excellence Inc. in Williamsburg and later became a senior account representative for Security First Group.  "My father gave us the sense that we could achieve anything we wanted to.  He taught us the importance of education; I have a law degree and my sister has a masters in education," said Renz.

Dr. Renz had married Mary Britton Renz in 1954; she died in 1993.  He was a member of Bruton Parish Episcopal Church and an active lay reader.

Surviving are his son, David Wayne Renz, and his wife, Maria Manzie, of Falls Church; daughter, Rebecca Renz Smith, and her husband, Edward Alan Smith, of Buena Vista; sister, Kathryn Land of Wilson, North Carolina; three grandchildren, Wesley A. Renz, Aaron W. Smith and Alan G. Smith; and mother-in-law, Esther C. Britton of Williamsburg.

A funeral service will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. at Bruton Parish Episcopal Church with the Rev. Julia Dorsey Loomis officiating. Interment will follow in Williamsburg Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends at Bucktrout of Williamsburg Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Lung Association, P.O. Box 7065, Richmond, Virginia 23221; or the Heritage Humane Society, 430 Waller Mill Road, Williamsburg, Virginia 23185.
