Wakefield Reunions and Events
Wakefield Classes are busy at work planning reunions and maintaining websites to keep classmates connected. Here are some resources and plans for upcoming reunions. 1956 - Wakefield's very first graduating class is now 51 years past that exciting graduation time. Our 50th Reunion weekend was held in September of 2006 and was, by all accounts, a roaring success. We had planned to have a 2006 update on our Starstone printed and ready at the reunion but getting all the information together was more than we could handle at the time. Wishing to stick to our commitment, we started compiling the book in early 2007.Grant Walter began the work and together, he and his wife, Nancy Buchanan Walter, have put together a real masterpiece. There is a three page forward written by Donald Hawkins that takes us back in time and provokes memories that many have forgotten. He talks about our neighborhoods of Fairlington, Claremont, Glencarlyn, Shirlington, Parkington, etc. Don has given us some beautiful insights into the early years at Wakefield. The book goes on to show then and now pictures and current biographies of many of the classmates and even Harry Boscoe. There are many color pictures of our 50th reunion and some old pictures also. If anyone desires a copy please send a check for $30 to Wakefield ‘56, 6901 Broadleaf Terrace, Gainesville, VA 20155. Local Northern Virginia classmates from the class of 1956 meet from time to time at the Tyson's Corner Olive Garden. The normal time is a week night at 7:00 PM. Everyone is welcome including other classes. We are probably the rowdiest group that the Olive Garden has seen. If you are not currently on our list of regular attendees and would like to join us, please send your email address (or if no email, a phone number will be good) so that you can be informed when we schedule the dinners. Part of the plans include cruising the Potomac on Stan Palivoda's Paddlewheel the Vivian Hannah and a dinner dance. This past July, classmates and guests traveled on the Vivian Hannah to an island owned by Stan. They had a picnic lunch and tour. 1960 - The five year schedule includes: 2008 - Class gathering in San Antonio, TX - contact Kleehill@sbcglobal.net, October 11, 2008 - Annual Picnic, April or May, 2009 - Boat Cruise from Florida, October 10, 2009 - Annual Picnic, October 7 - 10, 2010 - 50th Class Reunion - contact jcmidgett@verizon.net and April or May 2010 - Boat Cruise from Florida. 1961 - The Wakefield Class of 1961 had its picnic at Sherando Park in Stephens City, VA on October 6th. The picnic was well attended by classmates, spouses, friends, kids and grandkids. Classmates came from VA, PA, NC and SC. The weather was great and everyone had a good time reminiscing about the good old days. Horseshoes, volleyball and a kids playground were available as well. Everyone enjoyed the hamburgers, hot dogs and shared special dishes and desserts. The picnic broke up around 6:00 pm with everyone looking forward to the 2nd Annual Picnic! 1962 - The Class of ‘62 held a successful 45-year anniversary reunion dinner at PJ Skidoos Restaurant in Fairfax, Va. They are now looking forward to the 50-year event and are looking for volunteers to help plan it. While classmates on the east coast held their reunion, classmates of the Great Northwest held their class reunion in Washington State! Yep, that's right! They're all there and still going strong! They held their own 45th, Class of 1962 reunion to coincide with the east coast classmates' celebration. Theirs was aboard John Wayne's old yacht, the Norwester. 1963 - On October 18, 2008 the Wakefield Class of ‘63 will have their 45th Reunion at Army Navy Country Club in Arlington. There will be a social event on the Friday night before the reunion. Jessie Bradley Knapp and Karen Roos Sikorski, are serving as Co-Chairs. 1968 - Kathy Hale Schaffer has been the self-appointed coordinator for the 1968 class reunions and wants classmates to know she is retiring from that position.
