"Integration of Wakefield"

The primary purpose of the Wakefield High School Education Foundation is to provide scholarships to graduating seniors at Wakefield High School. The Foundation also connects the Warrior Nation and preserves the history of Wakefield. A project was started in 2012 to capture the history of the racial integration of Wakefield in the early 1960s.

A series of oral history interviews were conducted, research was done on the history of segregation and integration, and Black Wakefield alumni visited with current day Sociology students at Wakefield.

The end result is a new book that captures those stories and conversations. It includes the reflections of twenty-one people: George Richardson, Glen Bayless, 64, James and Howard Bregman 60 and 64, Deborah Carpenter Brittain, 66, Isaac Brooks and Toni Clark Brooks, 65, Randolph Clark, 65, Robert Eldridge, 66, Preston H. Green, 67, Jacqueline Kenney Peyton and William Peyton, 66, Raymond Leak, 67, Kevin Mannix, 67, Clayton Powell, 65, Larry Randall, 65 , Bill Ricks, 64, Joseph Smackum, 66, Al Smuzynski, 65, Lynn Taylor Nelson, 62 and Coaches Shulte, Stein and Haithcock. Also included are a record of the conversations the alumni had with the Sociology students; photos from the Wakefield 1962 - 1965 yearbooks, the period of integration; and a timeline of events surrounding integration. The project undertaken by the Foundation is hopefully the first step in capturing this history. Others who played a role are invited to share their story and subsequent versions of the book will be expanded to include those stories.
